DID YOU KNOW…
Surf in Europe
began in Biarritz
The production manager and surfer from Malibu, Dick Zanuck, was in Biarritz in 1956 to film an adaptation of Hemingway’s novel “The Sun Also Rises”. He was impressed by the waves and sent word back to California to send over a surfboard. In 1957, Peter Viertel, husband of the actress Deborah Kerr, was the first to surf the waves of Biarritz.
